Storage Space: Closets and More!

Updated: Jan 8, 2020

Don't overlook storage and closet space- it's important! "80% of home buyers have at least one major regret about their new home purchase" according to REALTOR® Magazine and this regret has to do with lack of storage space.

Isn't this walk-in closet gorgeous!?

When looking at homes, it is important to plan how the clothing you have now will fit in the potential future closet. If your potential new home doesn't have the closet space you may need, see if you can add storage shelves or can extend the existing closet. Is a full body mirror important? Then maybe you'd like mirrored doors. Walk-in closets are sometimes high on buyers lists, and bonus points if there is an area in the closet to sit and put shoes on!

Consider: Is it important to you and your spouse to have 2 separate closets?

Holiday decor? Multiple cars? Bikes? Tool set? Garages can get unorganized pretty quickly because they are used for storing many things, so making sure there's room to add storage shelves if there aren't any already can be key! Knowing where you are planning to keep your gardening tools is important too- do you plan to have a small storage shed in the backyard, or are you going to fit it into the garage?

Consider: Try to avoid spending money on a storage unit by making the most of the storage areas in the home!

Pantry storage is key! Avoid keeping food in the cupboards because it takes up storage space for dishes, small appliances, and pots/pans. Adding a pantry to a kitchen is ideal if there isn't one already there. An organized pantry where everything has its place is appealing to buyers and something they look for.

Consider: Going above and beyond with storage when remodeling a kitchen.

Litte-to-no storage in the bathroom can be challenging. Buyers look for towel and toiletry storage either under the sink or in a linen closet close by. Having extra linen closets are a bonus!

Consider: Swap out your pedestal sink for a vanity sink to optimize storage opportunities.
